Tortoise Shell (hyphosis, longevity bead): prolong life for longevity. The shell was first appeared in 550 AD in India and Pakistan. In these regions, however, this kind of angle bead was not equal to longevity. Nevertheless, the amulet, which was used by the local people to drive out evil spirits, was handed down to Chinese people’s hands because of commercial trade. Therefore, the value of different culture has been changed to longevity as tortoise. It is endowed with different meaning and life.

King Gesar and DZi Beads

As is known to all, King Gesar was the one who uncovered the treasure of DZi Beads. King Gesar waged military campaigns against a neighboring state and won victories one after another, forcing the King Aza to surrender unconditionally. King Gesar took the land on peace terms. In a place near the Gangdise Mountains of Nepal, below a groaning golden stone frog, he found the location of treasures. From the giant clam, bluish white agate, Turkish jade, Lapis lazuli, ruby five boxes of white, red, yellow, blue and green lakes, he got 125,600 DZi Beads and dedicated some of them to the four great mountains where the heaven, dragon and demon and Tibetan landlord belonged to. He also distributed them to the soldiers and citizens, and buried the remaining DZi Beads in different regions of Tibet as the foundation of Tibetan treasure for future use to be taken care of by the landlords.

sacred DZi Beads

sacred  DZi Beads

Tibet is located in the mountainous area of Himalayas with high altitude and complex terrain and climate. To avoid any accident and disaster as well as disease triggered by the legendry evil spirits, the Tibetan people thus made various forms of instruments to avoid evil spirits according to their psychological need. However, they still think that DZi bead is the best and most valuable amulet.

Different totem symbols are painted on DZi bead and the common patterns are Aquarius, lotus, tiger teeth, bodhi, lines, etc. For the “eye” line, some cycles are drawn on some geometric lines from one “eye” to dozens of “eyes”. These totem symbols, remains of Zhang Zhung civilization, are related to religion. It is incontrovertible that the DZi bead has assimilated the reiki from the heaven and earth in this Buddhist holy land of China’s Tibet. With profound cultural connotation, the DZi bead has achieved sufficient development now. It is sacred in the heart of Tibetan people with an irreplacea

DZi Beads as Medicine

 DZi Beads as Medicine

Based on the study of a lot of material objects and ancient literature as well as the investigation from among the Buddhists and herdsmen in DZi Beads prevailing areas, it is believed to be true that DZi Beads can be used as medicine. However, it is hard to explain some of the phenomena and things by modern science for they may involve in something metaphysical, same as many mysterious natural phenomena and medical phenomena. Anyway, this is not about these concepts of potential science.

The differences of natural DZi Beads and artificial beads are specified in Tibetan Medicine book Shel Gong Shel Phreng (Jing Zhu Ben Cao). DZi, pain killer, easy to be identified for its shapes and patterns. Its grain is often very long in black, yellow, and brown colors and its sports are small. The artificial ones are often with distorted grains for your knowledge. The natural DZi is with gyro wheel shape and the grain can be nine times longer which can be applied on eyes to gain healing effects. The cold water in which it is soaked overnight can stop bleeding and can be taken orally; if it is smeared on the arrow heads, it can ward off evil.
