Decryption of DZi Beads
Drilling Processing
For friends who love collecting ancient DZi beads, they must
know the pore channel of bead is an important basis to judge whether a bead is
new or old.
For the
picture below, we can have a look at the tool of how the ancient people
drilling
The way of drilling in the
ancient times was greatly different from that of nowadays. Machine drilling is mainly
served as the modern means to open pores. The pore channel is very perfect in
line with lubricious drilling trace. Be careful, some fake businessmen open the
pore manually. As a result, the pore channel is rough. Thus, whether the pore
channel is in line is not the method to distinguish old beads.
[Have you
discovered why the pores will be in an intersecting shape?]
As is shown in the picture, we can discover
that there are two segments in one bean. The pore is not in line. The editor
deduces that the ancient people didn’t open the pore at one go without interruption, but step by
step. First, they drilled the pore from one end of the bean and stopped when it
reached to the middle or certain depth. Then, they drilled the pore from
another end with the same method until the channel was opened. We can easily
imagine that the pore channel of ancient bead looks like V shape.
[Drill the
pore from both end of the bead until they meet each other. In the meantime,
please pay attention to the drilling trace inside the channel, there is an
irregular helical lines.]
It is, of course, good if
both ends meet each other successfully in the middle in the first drilling.
However, how to remedy if the intersection is too small? According to the
editor’s
long-term observation, the conclusion is that we need the third time drilling,
which is to drill the original pore again. This time aims to get through the
both ends. Thus, we may discover that the pore is in “ \ _ / ” shape.
[Observe the cross section carefully. It is
not difficult to find out the trace of failed drilling in the first time and
successful drilling in the second time.]
